The Origins of Nicker Barker Farm...
Nicker Barker Farm originated in upstate New York, a region known for its strong Dutch heritage. In fact, the Knickerbockers date back to the early settlers in the 1600's. The Knickerbocker name has been used to denote activities, locations, facilities, and even sports teams associated with New York.
We had the unique opportunity to make a 'play' on this name with the character of our farm. Our farm residents have included ducks, geese, a cat, and other miscellaneous animals. However, the chief reason for being has been the loving care of our horses and dogs. Nicker is a sound that horses can make when they are communicating in a friendly way -- sort of a soft neigh or whinny. Barker is, of course a play on the sound associated with a dog's communication technique.
Hence, the genesis of the farm's name, denoting the tie to our animals as well as our upstate New York heritage. We have carried this name forward into our central Pennsylvania location.
